OTMA’s Early Years Lead Practitioner apprenticeship is a professional development programme for skilled practitioners who want to take the next step in their career. It supports educational settings in developing confident leaders who can influence practice, support teams, and ensure children receive outstanding early education and care.
Early Years Lead Practitioners play a vital role in shaping the quality of provision within their setting. They lead by example, supporting colleagues to develop their practice while ensuring learning experiences are inclusive, engaging, and aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Working directly with children, families, practitioners, and external agencies, they help create environments where children can learn, develop, and thrive. They also take responsibility for supporting operational aspects of provision, contributing to continuous improvement and maintaining high standards across the setting.
The Early Years Lead Practitioner apprenticeship focuses on developing advanced knowledge, leadership skills, and professional behaviours required to influence practice and improve outcomes for children.
Through structured learning, workplace application, and dedicated support from an expert Skills Coach, apprentices develop expertise in areas such as:
Apprentices develop the confidence to lead aspects of provision, support team development, and implement improvements that positively impact children’s learning and development.

The programme is suitable across a wide range of educational settings including nurseries, pre-schools, nursery schools, kindergartens, primary schools, hospitals, local authority provision, and out-of-school environments.
For employers, the apprenticeship provides a structured pathway to develop skilled practitioners who can support quality improvement, mentor colleagues, and strengthen leadership capacity within the setting.
High-quality early years provision relies on strong practitioners who can inspire others and model best practice. The Early Years Lead Practitioner apprenticeship develops the skills needed to lead confidently while remaining actively involved in children’s learning and development.
Apprentices explore how to support colleagues through mentoring, coaching, and professional guidance. They learn how to implement evidence-based approaches, monitor quality, and create stimulating learning environments that support every child to achieve their potential.
Particular emphasis is placed on supporting children with additional needs, promoting inclusion, and ensuring all children benefit from rich learning experiences tailored to their individual development.
Effective Early Years Lead Practitioners build strong relationships with children, families, colleagues, and external professionals. This apprenticeship develops the communication and leadership skills needed to work collaboratively and positively influence outcomes for children.
Learners strengthen their understanding of safeguarding, wellbeing, equality, and professional responsibility while developing the confidence to lead operational aspects of provision. They also learn how to engage with sector developments, reflect on their own practice, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
By combining leadership capability with practical expertise, apprentices become influential practitioners who support both children and colleagues to succeed.
On completion, apprentices achieve the Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner Apprenticeship Standard.
This qualification supports progression into senior leadership and management roles within the early years sector, including nursery management, setting leadership, curriculum leadership, and specialist practice roles.
For organisations, investing in the Early Years Lead Practitioner apprenticeship helps build a highly skilled workforce capable of maintaining excellent standards of care, education, and safeguarding while supporting the development of future practitioners.
The programme is delivered over 24 months, followed by a typical 3-month End-Point Assessment (EPA) period.
